If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be interested in our Goju-Ryu Karate Student Internship Program. This program is designed for advanced and expert-level students who want to take their karate to the next level and become a teaching assistant in our dojo.
Goju-ryu Karate is one of the four main styles of karate in Japan. It was founded by Chojun Miyagi, who studied under Kanryo Higaonna, a master of Naha-te, a martial art from Okinawa. Goju-Ryu Karate combines hard and soft techniques, using both circular and linear movements, breathing and body conditioning, and close-range and long-range attacks. Goju-ryu Karate emphasizes the balance of body, mind, and spirit, and the development of character, discipline, and respect.
Sensei Minke is the head instructor of our dojo and the founder of our Goju-ryu Karate Student Internship Program. He has over 20 years of experience in karate and holds a 1st-dan black belt in Goju-Ryu Karate. He is also a trained instructor, studying under Sensei Burtnik(St. Catharines) for 14 years of study, 4 in leadership and teaching students solo. Sensei Minke is a passionate and dedicated teacher who strives to inspire and motivate his students to achieve their full potential. He is also a caring and supportive mentor who provides individual feedback and guidance to his students.
A Senpai is a senior student who has reached the expert level of karate and has been selected by Sensei Minke to become a teaching assistant in our dojo. A Senpai is identified by wearing the Senpai belt, a half-white and half-black belt that symbolizes their dual role as a student and a teacher. A Senpai has the following responsibilities and benefits:
- Assist Sensei Minke with the training and instruction of the kids and youth classes each day, helping them with their techniques, forms, sparring, and etiquette.
- Receive additional training and coaching from Sensei Minke, learning advanced skills, strategies, and principles of Goju-Ryu Karate.
- Participate in special seminars, workshops, and events organized by Sensei Minke, such as guest lectures, demonstrations, competitions, and field trips.
- Gain valuable experience and skills in teaching, leadership, communication, and teamwork, which can help them personally and professionally.
